A Message from Jessica Roper
ACC Houston Chapter President

Dear ACC Houston Members:

It is a new year, which for most of us means back to work after a well-deserved rest over the holidays. I am not sure about you, but my 2018 was a year full of significant challenges, with both tremendous success and plenty of development opportunities to keep me motivated in 2019.

For the ACC Houston Chapter, 2018 was also full of tremendous success (and a few development opportunities as well!). To highlight a few of those successes, along with our incredible sponsors we delivered 60 programs, including over 60 hours of CLE credit. We also spent a day of service at the Houston Food Bank, providing over 13,000 meals to those most in need in our community. Additionally, we collected and donated over 200 pounds of school supplies for local teachers and schools in need, as well as awarded $48,000 in scholarship funds to local law students from diverse backgrounds. You should be very proud of these accomplishments as they reflect our dedication to developing the in-house legal community in Houston while giving back to the larger community in which we all live and work. Congratulations, and thank you!

2019 is also an exciting time for ACC Houston, as we will host our 20th Annual Golf/Spa Event at the end of February. Please be on the lookout for a save-the-date within the next few weeks as it promises to be a great event, with a few new twists and surprises for the both the golf and spa fans alike.

I am also very excited about our new partnership with The Texas Lawbook (which you all have a complimentary subscription to just by being ACC Houston members) and their support in bringing back community-wide recognition of members of the Houston in-house legal community with the 2019 Corporate Counsel Awards. Calls for nominations in a number of categories will be communicated soon, and I look forward to spending an evening in April with you recognizing the top in-house lawyers and legal departments in Houston; more to come!

We should not, of course, reflect on our success over the past year and look to the excitement of 2019 without thinking about what we can do better: communication. What do I mean by that? With a chapter membership of over 1,000 and the number of programs we host, it is imperative that we all communicate, and update such communication if our plans change, our ability to attend events.  Our sponsors spend a considerable amount of time and money on these events and knowing what to plan for is not only important logistically, it is imperative to our long-term ability to deliver quality educational and networking events to you. I fully realize that things come up that might prevent us from attending an event we had previously committed to, and that is okay. With modern technology, we have the simple and near effortless ability to let our hosts know about our changes of plans so that they too, can make appropriate and timely adjustments. It is a simple courtesy that can make a big impact, and an area where we can improve.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish you all a meaningful, mindful and healthy year ahead. I look forward to your support, and more importantly supporting you, in 2019.

Kind regards,

Jessica Roper
